Welcome, I am Dr. Cheryl Santiago-Venture
I am a Clinical Psychologist and Somatic Experience Practitioner practicing in the South Bay of Los Angeles. I work with adults, adolescents, and families.
The client/therapist relationship is the upmost importance in order to create a safe and non judgmental environment. Therapy is place for healing and deep reflection. We all have an inherent capacity to heal ourselves, which can be thwarted by trauma, social influences, or adverse life experiences. Psychotherapy can provide different perspectives, restore balance, and mend internal wounds.
Background
I have found much joy and passion in supporting others on their healing journey.. My interest in psychology began early. I initially focused on child development and then child psychology. Now my practice focuses on adults, adolescents, and families.
I Have been working in private practice in the South Bay since 2010. Prior to private practice, I worked in inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities. Outpatient settings include Kaiser Permanente and community mental health facilities contracted by the Department of Mental Health.
I Received my Doctorate in 2006 from California School of Professional Psychology/ Alliant International University. I received my Bachelor degree in 2002 from University of California, San Diego. I have continued my education focusing on mind-body oriented psychotherapy. I have completed a three year training in Somatic Experiencing and am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). I am also an Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist and have completed an EMDRIA -Approved program.
I am certified in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support Internation (PSI).
Approach
I have a collaborative approach and tailor treatment plans to specific needs of each client. The client / therapist relationship is important to cultivate a safe environment for the healing process to unfold. I utilize a holistic approach and work with the mind/ body connection using somatic oriented psychotherapy, traditional, and evidence based treatments. Mind-Body/ Somatic Psychotherapy is a psychotherapy that works holistically with all parts of the client: body, mind, thinking, feeling, and sensing. Somatic therapy can bring awareness and reprocess what is stored in the body and access areas that may not be on the conscious level, restoring balance and regulation.
"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." C.G.Jung
- Somatic Experiencing®
Somatic Experiencing (SE™) is a mind-body oriented therapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine. SE™ is a gentle naturalistic approach aimed at regulating the nervous system and building resilience. SE™ addresses stress and trauma that gets stored in the body, honoring the body's innate healing mechanism and reinstating a capacity for self regulation.
- Eye Movement Desensitazion Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro is an extensively researched psychotherapy proven to help clients recover from trauma and adverse life experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to allow clients to access memories from aversive life events so that it can be reprocessed in a safe therapeutic environment and allows the brain to resume its natural healing process.

- Mindfulness
Mindfulness is conscious awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness practices can shift awareness to the present moment with openness and non judgment about the experience.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT can be helpful with altering dysfunctional thought processes and building skills.
- Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine-assited psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative therpaputic approach that combines the use of ketmine, a safe and effective medication, with talk therapy, somatic modalites, and insight oriented work to explore and process emotional changes. Ketamine is used to enhance the theraputic process by fostering a state of openess, introspection, and healing. KAP is backed by research demonstrating its effectiveness for conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other treatment resistant conditions. Ketamine has been shown to promote neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to form new healthier connections. This can help clients break free from unhelpful thought patterns, process past trauma, and achieve greater emotional balance. Combined with psychotherpay, KAP offers a unique pathway to deeper self awarness and lasting healing. I assist with the psychotherapy portion of the experience while Journey Clincal handles all medical spects, i.e. medical evaluation and prescribing.
